Congress Intensifies Battle for Majuli as Gogoi Leads Campaign Charge
In a significant political move, Assam Congress president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi arrived in Majuli on Saturday, spearheading a massive campaign effort for the party's candidate, Indraneel Pegu. The visit marks a spirited attempt by the Congress party to reclaim its former stronghold on the world's largest river island, which has undergone a tectonic shift in its political landscape over the past decade.
Rousing Reception and Campaign Momentum
Arriving by ferry across the Brahmaputra River, Gogoi was met with a rousing reception from hundreds of Congress supporters and grassroots workers. This enthusiastic welcome signals a tightening race in the Majuli assembly constituency, currently held by the BJP. The energy on the ground suggests a fierce contest between Congress challenger Indraneel Pegu and the incumbent BJP MLA, Bhuban Gam.
Addressing a sea of supporters, Gogoi struck a chord with the local populace by emphasizing a narrative of restoration and public service. He framed the upcoming election not merely as a political contest but as a movement for parivartan or change. In his speech, Gogoi stated, "I arrived in Majuli to seek voters' blessings for Indraneel, the Congress candidate. We are deeply overwhelmed by the warm welcome and blessings showered upon us by the people of Majuli. The massive turnout, blessings, and support from the public prove that this time, the people of Assam are set to overthrow misrule and clear the path for change."
Historical Context and Political Evolution
The political history of Majuli reflects the evolving identity of Assam's politics. Since 1972, the constituency has witnessed 11 assembly elections, with Congress emerging victorious four times, while the BJP and AGP have secured three wins each. The Janata Party won once. Congress's dominance was most notable between 2001 and 2011, when Rajib Lochan Pegu held the seat for three consecutive terms.
However, the tide turned in 2016 when BJP's Sarbananda Sonowal won the seat and eventually became the Chief Minister of Assam. Sonowal retained the seat in 2021 before moving to the Rajya Sabha, necessitating a by-election in 2022. In that contest, BJP's Bhuban Gam cemented the party's hold by defeating AJP's Chittaranjan Basumatary by a significant margin of 42,141 votes.
Strategic Campaigning and Voter Choice
As the election date draws near, Congress is banking on Indraneel Pegu to tap into anti-incumbency sentiments and leverage the party's historical roots on the island. With Gaurav Gogoi personally leading the charge, Congress aims to bridge the gap created during the 2022 by-polls. The BJP, meanwhile, relies on the developmental infrastructure pushed during the tenures of Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma.
For the people of Majuli, the choice remains between the continuity of the Double Engine government and Congress's promise of a new direction. This election is poised to be a critical test of political allegiances in a region that has seen significant changes over the years.
