Congress Leader Condemns Maharashtra's Loan Waiver as 'Mere Fiction' Until Farmers Receive Relief
In a scathing critique of the state government's agricultural policies, Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal declared on Monday that the loan waiver announced in the annual budget remains a "fiction" until farmers actually receive debt relief. Speaking at a farmers' rally in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Sapkal accused the BJP administration of being inherently anti-farmer.
'False Promises' and Unfulfilled Commitments
"The BJP government is fundamentally opposed to farmers' interests, and the loan waiver proclaimed by the Devendra Fadnavis-led administration is simply a platter of deceptive assurances — something that cannot be acknowledged as reality until it is genuinely implemented," Sapkal asserted during his address. He emphasized that mere announcements without tangible action provide no solace to the struggling agricultural community.
The Congress party organized a significant demonstration titled 'Kisan Sangharsh Nyay Yatra' (Farmers' Struggle for Justice March) along the route from Suratgaon to Tuljapur in Dharashiv district's Tuljapur taluka. This mobilization aimed to highlight numerous demands on behalf of the farming sector, which Sapkal described as facing both natural calamities and man-made crises.
Multiple Crises Plaguing Agricultural Sector
Addressing the gathered farmers, Sapkal outlined a grim picture of contemporary agricultural challenges. "Farmers are besieged by dual crises — those inflicted by nature and those created by policy failures. They are consistently denied fair prices for their harvests, and tragically, farmer suicides continue to escalate across the state," he lamented.
The Congress leader presented a concrete demand for immediate government action: "We insist that all outstanding dues documented in farmers' 7/12 land records must be settled without further delay. Only such decisive intervention will genuinely benefit the agricultural community and provide meaningful relief."
Concerns Over International Trade Agreements
Sapkal also voiced serious apprehensions regarding international trade policies affecting Indian agriculture. He specifically criticized the trade agreement negotiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's central government with the United States administration.
"This agreement was reached through capitulation to American demands and will inevitably lead to devastation for India's agricultural sector and its farmers," Sapkal warned. He suggested that such international pacts prioritize foreign interests over domestic food security and farmer welfare.
Broader Socio-Economic Challenges
In conversations with reporters following the rally, Sapkal expanded his critique to encompass wider national issues. "The problems confronting farmers, workers, women, and youth are severe and multifaceted. Inflation continues its upward trajectory while unemployment reaches alarming levels. Essential commodities like LPG cylinders, petrol, and diesel are becoming increasingly scarce, yet the government remains indifferent to these pressing concerns," he stated.
The Congress leader concluded with a stark warning about democratic norms: "There are deliberate attempts to impose authoritarian rule upon the nation, demonstrating blatant disregard for constitutional principles and democratic institutions."
The rally and subsequent statements underscore growing political tensions surrounding agricultural policy in Maharashtra, with opposition parties intensifying pressure on the ruling administration to deliver concrete results rather than rhetorical promises.
