Congress Appointments Spark Dissent in Maharashtra Unit

The Maharashtra Congress recently appointed 69 new city and district presidents as part of organisational restructuring ahead of the 2029 elections. However, these appointments have stirred discontent within the party. A section of the state Congress is planning to visit Delhi next week to meet All India Congress Committee (AICC) functionaries and express their disappointment.

Background of the Appointments

The appointments were made under the party's 'Sanghatan Srijan Abhiyan', where Congress observers visited various districts and shortlisted new city and district chiefs based on their reports. This initiative aimed to strengthen the party's grassroots presence.

Reasons for Discontent

Some state Congress members have expressed dissatisfaction over the selection of certain individuals. They claim that loyal party workers with decades of grassroots experience were ignored in some districts. One Congress member stated, "There are eligible party members who have worked at the grassroots for decades. However, ignoring such members, the party appointed functionaries who have recently joined the party."

Additionally, objections have been raised regarding the functioning of state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal. A senior Congress member noted, "Sapkal visits various districts for party work but chooses to meet only a handful of people close to him. He is not keeping in touch with party workers from all sections, which will not help the party grow. Therefore, some party members are planning to visit Delhi to discuss the issues of the state Congress."

Planned Visit to Delhi

Disgruntled members intend to meet AICC leaders to voice their concerns. They hope to address the perceived neglect of experienced workers and the leadership style of Sapkal, aiming to bring about corrective measures within the party.
