Uttarakhand CM Dhami Chairs High-Level Review for Char Dham Yatra 2026 Preparations
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami presided over a crucial high-level review meeting on Thursday at the Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali Auditorium in Vishwakarma Bhawan, Secretariat. The primary agenda was to meticulously assess and advance the preparations for the upcoming Char Dham Yatra scheduled for 2026, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, safety, and pilgrim convenience.
Green and Clean Initiatives Take Center Stage
Chief Minister Dhami issued clear directives to officials to implement the previous year's 'Green and Clean Char Dham Yatra' campaign with greater efficacy and rigor. He mandated that the pilgrimage be transformed into a plastic-free journey by installing an ample number of collection boxes along all routes and enforcing strict controls on plastic usage. Furthermore, he issued a stern warning against the spread of misinformation or rumors concerning the yatra, stating that such attempts would result in immediate FIRs and stringent legal action.
Emphasizing the power of community involvement, the Chief Minister called for the active participation of local bodies, voluntary organizations, and youth groups. He envisioned transforming the Char Dham Yatra into a mass movement, fostering a sense of collective responsibility and pride among residents and visitors alike.
Enhanced Safety, Healthcare, and Infrastructure
Regarding aerial services, CM Dhami issued uncompromising instructions to ensure full compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for helicopter operations. This includes mandatory regular maintenance, rigorous fitness checks for all aircraft, and adequate rest intervals for crews to prevent operational overloading. Officials were also directed to bolster the weather-based real-time monitoring system to enhance emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
To improve the pilgrim experience, the Chief Minister ordered the development of attractive selfie points and theme-based installations at key locations. Concurrently, he stressed the need for significant improvements in cleanliness, beautification, and signage along the yatra routes.
On the healthcare front, directives were given to establish sufficient medical units and temporary hospitals as required along the pilgrimage paths. The plan also includes an increase in veterinary facilities for animals and ensuring the ample availability of clean drinking water through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and other resources.
Streamlining Pilgrim Management and Security
Prioritizing pilgrim convenience, CM Dhami ordered the development of essential basic amenities, including toilets and shelters. He underscored the necessity for effective slot management and crowd control systems, integrated with real-time digital monitoring, to drastically reduce waiting times for darshan (sacred viewings).
The online registration system is set to be further strengthened with additional booths at crowded centers and a simplified digital process. From a security perspective, the Chief Minister mandated that CCTV cameras remain fully operational across the entire route, with the implementation of AI-based surveillance systems in necessary areas. Enhanced monitoring at sensitive locations and continuous supervision from control rooms were also emphasized.
Robust Law, Order, and Disaster Preparedness
Taking a firm stance on law and order, instructions were given for adequate deployment of police and home guards at key routes, intersections, and market areas. To address traffic concerns, an effective traffic management plan must be enacted to avoid congestion, with alternative routes identified to prevent inconvenience to local residents.
In disaster management, CM Dhami directed the prior identification of vulnerable zones and the pre-emptive deployment of necessary resources. He called for better coordination among the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local administration. Keeping 24x7 control rooms and helplines active was stressed for prompt emergency responses.
Supply Chain, Transportation, and Ongoing Oversight
The Chief Minister explicitly stated that there should be no shortage of essential commodities such as LPG, petrol, diesel, and other necessities along the yatra routes. District supply officers will be held accountable, with separate nodal officers appointed to ensure daily monitoring.
On transportation, all vehicles must possess valid fitness certificates, green cards, and trip cards. The supply department was instructed to guarantee the uninterrupted availability of fuels along the Char Dham routes.
Referring to past disputes over community food services (bhandaras), the administration was directed to establish coordination between locals and pilgrims to find a permanent resolution. Strict action against overpricing was ordered, with mandatory display of rate lists at all shops.
Chief Minister Dhami also instructed that regular review meetings be held during the yatra period to monitor progress and implement immediate corrective measures based on past experiences. He emphasized the timely repair of potholes and consistent maintenance of road conditions to ensure a smooth and safe pilgrimage for all devotees.
