Chhattisgarh Government Intensifies Action Against Domestic LPG Cylinder Misuse

In a significant move to curb the diversion of domestic cooking gas for unauthorized purposes, the Chhattisgarh government has ramped up its enforcement efforts, conducting extensive raids across the state. Officials reported that the food department and district administrations have carried out 214 raids, resulting in the seizure of 1,013 domestic LPG cylinders so far.

District-Wise Seizures and Crackdown Objectives

Raipur district led the state with the highest number of seizures at 392 cylinders, followed closely by Bilaspur with 201 cylinders confiscated. The crackdown is strategically aimed at ensuring the regular availability of domestic cooking gas to genuine consumers and preventing its misuse for commercial or other unauthorized activities.

Officials emphasized that this action is part of a broader initiative to streamline LPG distribution and address supply chain issues that have affected households.

High-Level Review and Consumer-Friendly Measures

The progress of this crackdown was reviewed at a crucial meeting chaired by Food Secretary Reena Babasaheb Kangale on Tuesday. The meeting included the food director and regional managers from the three public sector oil companies operating in the state.

During the session, Kangale directed officials to widely publicize multiple LPG booking channels to enhance accessibility for consumers. These channels include dedicated WhatsApp numbers, mobile contact points, Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) numbers, and website links for online booking.

She specifically highlighted the need for broader dissemination of Indian Oil Corporation's new booking contacts: mobile number 8927225667 and IVRS number 8391990070, ensuring consumers can access refill services without unnecessary difficulty.

Operational Improvements and Supply Enhancements

Kangale instructed officials to expedite the clearance of pending LPG bookings and confirmed that cylinder supply has been increased across all districts to minimize inconvenience to consumers. This supply boost is expected to alleviate delays and ensure timely deliveries to households.

Structured Commercial LPG Distribution System

In alignment with Union petroleum ministry guidelines, the state has implemented a balanced and priority-based system for commercial LPG distribution. This system is designed to prevent disruption of essential public services while managing resources efficiently.

Under this structured arrangement, the following entities will receive gas supply according to their monthly requirements:

  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Educational institutions
  • Military and paramilitary camps
  • Jails and correctional facilities
  • Hostels and student accommodations
  • Social welfare institutions
  • Railway stations and airport canteens

Consumption Caps for Government and Commercial Entities

For government offices, canteens, and guest houses operated by the Centre, state, and their public sector undertakings, commercial LPG supply will be capped at 50% of their previous consumption levels. This measure aims to promote efficiency and reduce wastage.

Additionally, animal feed manufacturing plants, seed production units, hotels, and restaurants will be supplied within a fixed limit of 20% of their prior usage, ensuring fair distribution across sectors.

Grievance Redressal Mechanisms

To address consumer complaints related to LPG booking and supply, the food department's call centre numbers 1800-233-3663 and 1967 remain active. Grievances are being resolved in coordination with oil companies on a priority basis, providing a responsive support system for affected consumers.

This comprehensive approach by the Chhattisgarh government underscores its commitment to safeguarding domestic LPG supplies and ensuring equitable access for all legitimate users across the state.
