The political landscape in Chennai intensified on Saturday as numerous candidates contesting in various assembly constituencies across the city officially filed their nomination papers. Immediately following the formal submission process, candidates from major political parties hit the ground running, initiating comprehensive door-to-door campaigns to connect directly with voters in their respective constituencies.
Villivakkam Constituency: DMK and AIADMK Candidates Begin Campaign Battles
Among the prominent candidates who filed their nominations were Karthik Mohan, the DMK candidate for Villivakkam constituency, and his primary rival S R Vijayakumar from the AIADMK. Both candidates wasted no time in launching their electoral outreach efforts immediately after completing the nomination formalities.
AIADMK's Vijayakumar began his campaign by visiting the Arulmigu Soumya Damodara Prasad temple in Villivakkam during the evening hours. Following this religious visit, he campaigned extensively in the surrounding neighborhoods, engaging with residents and discussing local issues. His campaign trail then extended to Ayanavaram, where he received support from AIADMK's deputy propaganda secretary and actress Vindhya, who actively campaigned alongside him.
M Vinoth Kunar, AIADMK's youth wing coordinator, provided insights into their campaign strategy, stating, "We have successfully covered approximately 40,000 voters out of the total 1.59 lakh voters in Villivakkam constituency. Our outreach has included visits to gated communities and apartment complexes across the area. In the coming week, our focus will shift specifically toward low-income neighborhoods to ensure comprehensive voter engagement."
DMK's Campaign Momentum and Development Promises
Meanwhile, DMK candidate Karthik Mohan launched his own vigorous campaign in Ayanavaram, accompanied by a substantial group of party cadres and supporters. The candidate articulated his vision for the constituency, declaring, "My primary objective is to transform Villivakkam into a model constituency that serves as an example of effective governance and development. I am committed to taking the numerous achievements of the DMK government to every single household in our area, and I am confident we will secure a resounding victory through this direct engagement with voters."
In South Chennai, DMK's Sholinganallur candidate Aravind Ramesh focused his initial campaign efforts on coastal communities, visiting fishermen villages in Uthandi, Injambakkam, and Neelankarai. During these visits, local fishermen presented him with a memorandum outlining their specific needs and concerns.
Ramesh explained, "The fishing communities have requested subsidies for fishing nets to support their livelihoods. Additionally, they have expressed the need for a net-stitching area located near the beach for practical convenience. However, this proposal faces regulatory challenges as the preferred location falls under CRZ-I (Coastal Regulation Zone) restrictions. I have assured the fishermen that their concerns will be actively taken up and addressed through appropriate channels."
Expanding Campaign Reach Across Chennai Constituencies
The campaign activities extended beyond these high-profile contests, with RK Nagar MLA J J Ebenezer conducting outreach in slum pockets within Korukkupet. His campaign efforts focused on understanding and addressing the specific needs of these communities as election preparations intensify.
Similarly, TVK's Marie Wilson, who is contesting as RK Nagar's candidate, expanded his voter outreach initiatives across the constituency. Ebenezer commented on the evolving campaign dynamics, noting, "The election campaigns are expected to become significantly more heated in the coming weeks as senior party leaders and star campaigners begin visiting the city. For now, our immediate priority is covering as many households as possible through direct, personal engagement with voters to understand their concerns and present our development agenda."
