BMC Elections 2026: Multiple Identity Proofs Approved for Voters

The Maharashtra State Election Commission has released a list of acceptable identity documents for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections in 2026. Voters will need to present one of these proofs to participate in the democratic process.

Thirteen Valid Identity Documents

Officials confirm that thirteen different identity proofs will be accepted at polling stations. The photo identity card issued by the Election Commission of India remains the primary document for voter verification.

Other valid proofs include passports, driving licenses, and PAN cards. Service identity cards with photographs from government or public sector undertakings are also permissible.

Smart cards issued under the National Population Register scheme will serve as valid identification. Bank or post office passbooks containing photographs can be presented as well.

Additional Acceptable Documents

Maharashtra's election authorities have included several other documents in their approved list. MGNREGA job cards with photographs will be accepted for voter identification purposes.

Health insurance smart cards issued under the central government's scheme can be used. Pension documents featuring photographs will also serve as valid proof of identity.

Official identity cards issued to Members of Parliament or Members of Legislative Assembly remain acceptable. Unique Identification Authority of India cards, commonly known as Aadhaar cards, complete the list of approved documents.

Preparation for Smooth Polling

Election officials emphasize that voters must carry original documents to polling stations. Photocopies or digital versions will not be accepted under any circumstances.

The commission aims to ensure a smooth voting experience for all eligible citizens. Proper identification helps maintain the integrity of the electoral process while preventing fraudulent activities.

Authorities encourage voters to verify their names on electoral rolls well before election day. This preparation helps avoid last-minute confusion and ensures everyone can exercise their democratic right without unnecessary delays.
