He polled 52,868 votes, defeating the All India Trinamool Congress candidate Vijay Upadhyay, who received 47,071 votes. The winning margin was 5,797 votes.
Key Candidates and Vote Share
The contest was tightly fought. CPI(M)'s Bharatram Tewari finished third with 4,108 votes. Congress and other independent candidates trailed significantly. NOTA recorded 672 votes. The seat, historically significant as home to Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral mansion, is part of the Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha constituency.
Previous Election Results
In 2021, Vivek Gupta of the TMC won Jorasanko by defeating BJP's Mina Devi Purohit by around 12,743 votes, with TMC polling approximately 53%. That margin was narrower than in many other Kolkata North seats, reflecting the constituency's competitive nature. Gupta was not fielded again in 2026. In 2016, Smita Bakshi of the TMC won, defeating BJP's Rahul Sinha in a close contest.
Demographics and Turnout
Jorasanko has an entirely urban electorate with a significant Hindi-speaking and Marwari business community, reflecting Kolkata's trading heritage. Voter turnout is relatively low compared to other city constituencies; it recorded just around 50% in 2021. The seat flipped in the 2024 Lok Sabha polling, when the BJP out-polled the TMC here.
