Telangana BJP President Condemns Demolitions for Musi River Buffer Zone
In a strong stance against the state government's actions, Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao has declared that there is no necessity to expand the buffer zone along the Musi river by demolishing the homes of impoverished residents. He has urgently called upon the state government to cease all evictions associated with the Gandhi Sarovar project, labeling the ongoing demolitions as deeply unjust and harmful to vulnerable communities.
Agitation for Justice Until Affected Families Receive Relief
Addressing victims at the 'Musi Gosa-BJP Bharosa' program, Rao emphasized that the demolitions carried out under the guise of river cleaning are fundamentally unfair. He issued a stern warning, stating that the Bharatiya Janata Party will persist with its agitation and protests until the displaced families obtain proper justice and compensation for their losses.
Rao alleged that the project has led to the destruction of houses belonging to economically weaker sections, and even flats occupied by soldiers, highlighting the broad impact on various segments of society. He demanded an immediate halt to these forced demolitions and reassured the affected families that the BJP stands firmly in solidarity with them during this challenging period.
Contrast with Gujarat's Sardar Sarovar Project
Citing the example of the Sardar Sarovar project in Gujarat, Rao pointed out that development there was executed scientifically without resorting to the destruction of poor people's homes. He noted that the Gujarat project not only avoided such displacements but also successfully generated tourism and employment opportunities, serving as a model for balanced development.
Rao firmly rejected claims that the Central government is supporting the Gandhi Sarovar project, clarifying that it is solely an initiative undertaken by the state government of Telangana. This distinction underscores the local nature of the controversy and the state's responsibility in addressing the concerns raised.
Focus on River Restoration Without Displacement
While expressing support for efforts to beautify and restore the Musi river, Rao stressed that any restoration work should prioritize making the river clean, pollution-free, and free from foul odors. He insisted that these environmental goals can and should be achieved without displacing vulnerable communities, advocating for a more compassionate and inclusive approach to urban development.
The BJP leader's statements have intensified the political debate surrounding the Gandhi Sarovar project, putting pressure on the state government to reconsider its strategies and ensure that development does not come at the cost of human suffering and displacement.
