BJP's 2026 Tamil Nadu Candidates List Released, Annamalai Out

BJP Announces Candidates for 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its candidate list for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections on Friday, marking a significant step in its electoral strategy for the state. The list includes prominent leaders such as state president Nainar Nagenthran, who will contest from Sattur, and former governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, fielded from Mylapore.

Key Candidates and Strategic Selections

In a move that has drawn attention, the party has fielded Vanathi Srinivasan from Coimbatore (North) and Union minister L Murugan from Avinashi. However, in a surprising development, former state president K Annamalai has not been given a ticket, despite intense internal discussions over his candidature. This exclusion is notable given his previous role and influence within the party.

The list also features family connections and new entrants. Kirthika Shivkumar, daughter-in-law of sitting BJP MLA C Saraswathi, will contest from Modakkurichi, while S Thangaraj, son of Hindu Munnani leader Kadeswara Subramaniam, has been fielded in Tirupur (South). Additionally, M Bhojarajan, who contested and lost in Udhagamandalam during the 2021 elections, is the only candidate renominated for the 2026 polls.

Expansion in Southern Tamil Nadu

In southern Tamil Nadu, the BJP has made strategic inclusions to strengthen its presence. S Vijayadharani, who quit the Congress party last year to join the BJP, will contest from Vilavancode. M R Gandhi has been given the Nagercoil seat, indicating the party's focus on expanding its base in this region.

Other candidates announced include Raama Sreenivasan from Madurai South and Ananthan Ayyasamy from Vasudevanallur (SC). In constituencies where the BJP will directly face its rival Congress, such as Colachel and Padmanabhapuram, the party has fielded T Sivakumar and P Ramesh, respectively, setting the stage for competitive contests.

This candidate list reflects the BJP's efforts to balance experienced leaders with new faces and leverage local connections to enhance its electoral prospects in Tamil Nadu. The exclusion of Annamalai suggests potential shifts in party dynamics and strategy as preparations for the 2026 elections intensify.
