BJP Secures Unopposed Victories in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Elections
On Wednesday, the deadline for withdrawing nomination forms for the 2026 Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections passed, resulting in significant political developments. A total of 22 nomination forms were withdrawn from various wards across the city, reshaping the electoral contest.
Unopposed Wins for BJP in Key Wards
In a notable turn of events, BJP candidates were declared elected unopposed to seats reserved for women in the Thaltej and Vasna wards. This mirrors a similar scenario from the 2021 elections, where a Congress candidate withdrew her nomination for a women-reserved seat in the Naranpura ward, leading to an unopposed BJP victory.
Specifically, in the Thaltej ward, Congress candidate Ramila Thakor withdrew her nomination for the seat reserved for OBC women on Wednesday. This withdrawal paved the way for BJP candidate Rita Thakor to be declared the winner without a contest. Similarly, in the Vasna ward, no Congress candidate filed for the OBC women-reserved seat, resulting in BJP's Bhagwati Bharwad being elected unopposed.
Congress Withdrawals Extend to Male Candidates
The trend of withdrawals was not limited to women-reserved seats. In the Sarkhej ward, both male Congress candidates pulled out of the race. Congress candidate Bharat Bharwad withdrew his nomination on Tuesday, followed by another Congress candidate, Waris Saiyed, who withdrew on Wednesday.
Additionally, in the Chandlodia ward, candidate Pradeep Patel withdrew his nomination on Wednesday. Patel had previously posted a video citing threats as a reason for his decision to exit the contest. Despite these withdrawals in Sarkhej and Chandlodia wards, other candidates remain in the fray, ensuring that elections will proceed as scheduled in these areas.
Other Political Parties Also See Withdrawals
The withdrawal phenomenon extended beyond Congress and BJP. An AIMIM candidate withdrew from the Khadia ward, and two AIMIM candidates pulled out from the Danilimda ward. These moves indicate a broader pattern of nomination adjustments across multiple political factions in the lead-up to the elections.
The cumulative effect of these withdrawals has altered the competitive dynamics in several wards, with BJP benefiting directly in key reserved seats. As the election date approaches, these developments are likely to influence voter perceptions and campaign strategies in Ahmedabad.
