BJP Secures Strong Lead in Pune PMC Election 2026 Results
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has established a dominant position from the very start of vote counting for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) election 2026. Counting began at 10 am, and early trends show the BJP leading decisively across multiple wards.
Key Contest and Historical Context
The main electoral battle unfolded between the BJP and an alliance of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP(SP). The BJP fielded candidates on all 165 seats, aiming to retain its previous hold on power. The party had governed the PMC single-handedly from 2017 to 2022.
After that term, an Administrator took control of the civic body due to a delay in polls. The Supreme Court had put the elections on hold over reservation issues. The United NCP served as the primary opposition party during the BJP's tenure, ending its own decade-long rule from 2007 to 2017.
Voter Turnout and Ward Performance
The overall voting turnout for the PMC election reached 52.42 percent. Ward-level data reveals significant variations in participation.
- The Shivane-Khadakwasla-Dhayari ward recorded the highest turnout at 57.81 percent. This area recently joined the PMC after city expansion.
- The Aundh-Bopodi ward saw the lowest turnout of 45.12 percent.
- Wanowrie-Salunke Vihar followed with a turnout of 45.54 percent.
Political analysts note the BJP is banking on increased support in central Pune, while the NCP alliance expects stronger results in suburban areas.
Candidate Numbers and Previous Election Comparison
A total of 1,165 candidates contested the election across 41 wards. In the parallel Pimpri–Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) polls, 128 seats are available over 32 wards.
The previous PMC election in 2017 had a voter turnout of 55.45 percent. Results from that poll saw the BJP win 97 seats. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured 39 seats, Shiv Sena took 10, and Congress won nine. Other parties and independents accounted for the remaining seats.
