Over 100 people were rescued in Mumbai's Vasai region as heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding, disrupting normal life and submerging salt pans in East and West localities. Power supply in many areas was affected, according to officials.
Details of the Rescue Operations
The rescue operations, conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities, began on July 4, 2026, after water levels rose rapidly in low-lying areas. Residents were evacuated to temporary shelters set up by the municipal corporation. The flooding also submerged salt pans in Vasai East and West, impacting local livelihoods.
Impact on Daily Life
Normal life came to a standstill as roads were inundated, public transport was disrupted, and power supply was cut off in several localities to prevent accidents. Schools and offices remained closed, and commuters faced long delays. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Mumbai and surrounding areas, predicting continued heavy rainfall.
According to a local official, "The situation is critical, but rescue teams are working round the clock to ensure safety of residents. We have deployed boats in worst-affected areas."
Government Response and Relief Measures
The Maharashtra government has announced compensation for affected families and deployed additional teams for relief work. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reviewed the situation and instructed officials to restore essential services urgently. The civic body has set up control rooms for emergency assistance.
Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid venturing into floodwaters. Further rainfall is expected in the coming days, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.
