BJP Asserts Unity in NDA Over Bihar Chief Minister Succession
In Patna, as discussions intensify over who will succeed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) issued a clarification on Thursday, stating that there is no dispute within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) regarding the face of the next chief minister. The party emphasized that the decision will be collectively made by the alliance leadership.
Collective Decision-Making Process
BJP spokesperson Prem Ranjan Patel, in a written statement, highlighted that the name of the new chief minister will be determined through a consensus among NDA leaders, ensuring it is acceptable to all parties involved. He noted that Nitish Kumar, as a senior NDA leader, will be consulted in this process, respecting his contributions to Bihar's development.
Patel stated, "Nitish has made a significant contribution in advancing Bihar. Whoever becomes the CM in the future will also receive Nitish’s blessings, affection and guidance." He further explained that the BJP's alliance with Nitish Kumar is long-standing, with both parties accustomed to collaborative work, which will facilitate a smooth transition when the time comes.
Dismissal of Speculation
The debate over succession has gained momentum following Nitish Kumar's nomination to the Rajya Sabha, with many viewing his resignation as imminent. However, senior JD(U) minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary dismissed recent speculation that BJP deputy CM Samrat Choudhary could be a potential successor. This speculation arose after Nitish Kumar was seen placing his hands on Samrat Choudhary's shoulder during a public rally in Jamui and making remarks interpreted as endorsements.
Choudhary clarified that the chief minister's actions were taken out of context, noting that Nitish Kumar often encourages colleagues publicly in a similar manner. "The CM has often publicly encouraged his colleagues in a similar manner and there is nothing unusual in what he said," he told reporters, adding that Samrat Choudhary has been working closely with Nitish Kumar as deputy chief minister.
Conflicting Signals and Ongoing Developments
Amidst this, Nitish Kumar's gestures during his ongoing Samriddhi Yatra continue to attract attention. In a recent event in Munger, he was observed placing his hands on the shoulders of both Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary and Union minister Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh, offering conflicting signals compared to earlier occasions where he appeared more focused on Samrat Choudhary. This has added to the intrigue surrounding the succession plans, as political observers closely monitor the situation.
The BJP's statement aims to quell rumors and reinforce alliance unity, underscoring that the final decision will be a collective one, involving all NDA stakeholders and respecting Nitish Kumar's legacy in Bihar politics.
