BJP MLA Demands Renaming of Jahazpur to Yagyapur Citing Mahabharata Era Heritage

In a significant move during the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly session on Tuesday, BJP MLA Gopichand Meena from Bhilwara district made a formal demand to rename his constituency, Jahazpur, as Yagyapur. The legislator emphasized the deep historical and religious roots of the town, asserting that its original name during the Mahabharata period was indeed Yagyapur.

Historical and Religious Significance

Meena passionately argued that Jahazpur holds immense mythological importance, which warrants the restoration of its ancient name. According to popular belief and local legends, the area was the site of the serpent sacrifice performed by Janmejay. This ritual was conducted to avenge the death of his father, King Parikshit, who was fatally bitten by the serpent Takshak.

The legendary site of this sacrifice is located in Nagola, within Jahazpur, and is currently marked by a huge statue of Nag Devta. This sacred spot attracts numerous devotees annually, particularly during the festivals of Nag Panchami and Sawan Panchami, highlighting its ongoing religious relevance.

Support from Local Authorities

The MLA's demand is not an isolated initiative. It follows a unanimous resolution passed by the Jahazpur municipal board, which also called for the name change to Yagyapur. This collective endorsement underscores the local consensus on recognizing the town's historical identity.

Meena stressed that considering the profound religious and mythological connections, reverting to the name Yagyapur would honor the town's heritage and align with its cultural legacy. The proposal aims to preserve and celebrate the ancient narratives that have shaped the region's identity over centuries.

This development in the Rajasthan Assembly highlights the ongoing efforts to integrate historical and cultural elements into contemporary governance, reflecting a broader trend of acknowledging India's rich past in administrative decisions.
