BJP Leaders Demand Apology from IT Minister Priyank Kharge for 'Communal' Remark
Mangaluru: In a strong political development, Dakshina Kannada district BJP president Sathish Kumpala and Mangaluru City North MLA Y Bharath Shetty have jointly demanded that Karnataka's IT Minister Priyank Kharge issue a public apology for his recent remarks against Dakshina Kannada district. The leaders assert that the minister's characterization of the district as 'communal' has deeply wounded the pride and sentiments of its residents.
Allegations of Hurt Sentiments and Development Critique
Addressing the media on Monday, Kumpala expressed profound disappointment over Minister Kharge's statements, which suggested that communal issues have hindered development in Dakshina Kannada. "The minister's comments have not only hurt the people of Dakshina Kannada but also unfairly tarnished the district's progressive image," Kumpala stated. He challenged Kharge to clarify his own contributions to the district's development, questioning the minister's focus on criticism rather than constructive action.
Kumpala elaborated on the district's achievements, highlighting its national recognition as a banking cradle and an educational hub. "Students from across India and foreign nations pursue education here, reflecting the district's inclusive and forward-thinking environment. The people of Dakshina Kannada are not communal; they are dedicated to progress and development," he emphasized. In a pointed comparison, Kumpala urged Kharge to introspect whether his own represented district, Kalaburagi, offers similar facilities and opportunities.
Reference to Regional Imbalance Report and Political Criticism
Citing the Karnataka Regional Imbalances Redressal Committee report of 2026, led by economist M Govinda Rao, Kumpala noted that Kalaburagi is listed among the state's backward districts. "Despite being represented by AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and IT minister Priyank Kharge, Kalaburagi remains underdeveloped. Instead of criticizing Dakshina Kannada, the minister should focus on uplifting his own constituency," Kumpala argued. He also criticized Kharge for his remarks against the BJP and RSS, accusing him of diverting attention from governance issues.
MLA Y Bharath Shetty added to the critique by pointing out administrative failures in Mangaluru's development projects. "Although land was identified for an IT Park in Mangaluru, the IT minister has failed to complete the tender process, stalling potential growth and job creation in the region," Shetty remarked, underscoring what he described as negligence in the minister's portfolio.
Complaint Filed Against Puttur MLA for Derogatory Remarks
In a related incident, the BJP Puttur Rural Mandal SC Morcha has filed a formal complaint at the Puttur town police station against Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai. The complaint alleges that Rai made derogatory remarks against Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the leader of the opposition in the legislative council, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste community.
Kumpala condemned Rai's language, stating, "As an elected representative, MLA Rai should refrain from using derogatory words against anyone, especially political opponents. Such behavior is unacceptable and undermines the dignity of public discourse." The BJP leader called for accountability and respectful dialogue in political engagements, emphasizing the need to maintain decorum in public life.
