Political Battle Heats Up in Davanagere South Assembly Bypoll
Campaigning for the crucial Davanagere South assembly bypoll reached fever pitch on Tuesday as both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress deployed their senior leadership to woo voters. The high-stakes contest has turned into a major political showdown with leaders from both sides making strategic appearances across the constituency.
BJP's Star Campaigners Hit the Ground
The BJP fielded a formidable lineup including former chief minister BS Yediyurappa, opposition leader R Ashoka, and prominent leader Sunil Kumar. They campaigned extensively for party candidate Srinivas T Dasakariyappa, addressing multiple rallies and engaging with voters door-to-door. The saffron party is leaving no stone unturned to secure victory in this important electoral battle.
Congress Counteroffensive with Heavyweights
On the Congress side, deputy chief minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president DK Shivakumar led the charge alongside AICC general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala. Women and child development minister Laxmi Hebbalkar and other party functionaries joined the campaign trail to support Congress candidate Samarth Shamanur.
Shivakumar addressed speculation about housing minister Zameer Ahmed Khan's absence, clarifying that Khan is currently serving as a star campaigner for the Congress in the Kerala elections where he has been entrusted with significant responsibilities. "Zameer will join the bypoll campaign after completing his work in Kerala," Shivakumar stated emphatically.
Congress Defends Minority Representation Strategy
The Congress leader strongly defended his party's approach to minority community representation, asserting that the party doesn't rely on individual personalities. "We are all united in facing the elections. Many leaders from the minority community have already settled in the Davanagere South assembly constituency. The party does not rely on a single person," he declared.
Shivakumar emphasized that DK Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah and Zameer Ahmed are not the focus of Congress, insisting that "the election is based on the party's principles." He highlighted Congress contributions to minority communities, noting that "the chairmanship of 16 state corporations and boards has been given to the minority community."
"Congress is making concerted efforts to nurture leadership within the Muslim community. In every election, there are candidates from the Muslim community. Congress votes will not be divided by these independent candidates," Shivakumar added confidently.
BJP Releases Manifesto with Development Focus
Meanwhile, opposition leader R Ashoka unveiled the BJP's comprehensive manifesto for the Davanagere South assembly constituency. The document outlines the party's vision for transforming the area into a model constituency with special emphasis on:
- Drinking water infrastructure
- Sewage management systems
- Cleanliness initiatives
- Healthcare facilities
- Overall infrastructure development
Ashoka Launches Scathing Attack on Congress Government
After releasing the manifesto, Ashoka launched a blistering attack on chief minister Siddaramaiah's administration, alleging fiscal mismanagement. "CM Siddaramaiah was keen on taking loans and the state government has borrowed Rs 4.2 lakh crore since 2023," he claimed.
The BJP leader alleged that Siddaramaiah had borrowed more than any chief minister who ruled the state previously, noting that the government was being derisively referred to as ‘Loan Ramayya'. "After Siddaramaiah took charge, he has turned the people of the state into debtors. Karnataka's economic situation is in the ICU," Ashoka asserted dramatically.
Allegations of Dynastic Politics
Ashoka further accused the Congress of denying tickets to Muslims, backward classes and Dalits while favoring political dynasties. "The Shamanur family already has the father as a minister and the mother as an MP. Now, the son has been made the byelection candidate," he pointed out.
The opposition leader warned that "if the Congress candidate wins this time, there will be no representation for the next 50 years in this constituency," suggesting that the Shamanur family would establish permanent political control over the area.
As the campaigning enters its final phase, both parties are pulling out all stops to secure victory in what has become a prestige battle with significant implications for Karnataka's political landscape. The bypoll results will be closely watched as an indicator of public sentiment ahead of larger electoral contests.
