Bihar Political Row Erupts Over Competing Governance Models

Even as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has yet to formally resign following his nomination to the Rajya Sabha earlier this week, a significant political confrontation has erupted between two crucial National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners in Bihar. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its long-time ally, the Janata Dal (United) or JD(U), engaged in a sharp war of words on Friday over competing claims about their respective "models of governance." This dispute has intensified speculation regarding Nitish Kumar's successor and the future political direction of the state.

The Spark: BJP's 'Samrat Model' Assertion

The controversy ignited when BJP spokesperson Niraj Kumar posted a message on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. In his post, he claimed that the "Samrat Model" of governance had effectively forced criminals in Bihar to either flee the state or surrender before the police. He attributed this success to aggressive police encounters and the strategic use of bulldozer actions against illegal properties.

"This is 'Samrat Model'. Quite like 'Yogi Model' in Uttar Pradesh, in Bihar too, crime is being eradicated," Kumar wrote on X. He further argued that while opposition parties frequently label the situation in Bihar as "jungle raj," the reality is quite different. According to him, criminals are actually fleeing into the jungle to escape law enforcement, indicating a restoration of order.

The BJP spokesperson confidently asserted that there is no place for criminals in Bihar under this model and predicted that the state would become completely crime-free within the next three months. "Janata dekh rahi hai, sushasan wapas laut raha hai (Now, the people can see how good governance is staging a comeback)," he declared, a statement that quickly triggered a political storm and drew immediate reactions from JD(U) leaders.

JD(U)'s Firm Defense of the 'Nitish Model'

The remarks from the BJP spokesperson prompted a sharp and immediate reaction from JD(U) leaders, who firmly insisted that only the "Nitish Model" has genuinely ensured good governance and substantial development in Bihar over the past two decades. Rural Development Minister Shrawan Kumar, considered a close confidant of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, addressed the media on Friday to defend the state's existing governance framework.

"There must not be any comment over the 'Nitish Model'. It is due to this model that Bihar reached the great height of progress in the past 20 years," the minister stated emphatically. He highlighted that the "Nitish Model" has been instrumental in transforming Bihar from a state plagued by underdevelopment and lawlessness to one experiencing significant growth and stability.

Shrawan Kumar posed a rhetorical question to underscore his point: "Isase behtar kaun model ho sakta hai (Which could be a better model than this)?" He affirmed that this same model would continue to guide governance in Bihar in the future, regardless of leadership changes.

Unwavering Support from JD(U) Leadership

JD(U) chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar also stepped forward to assert the centrality of the "Nitish Model" to Bihar's governance. "Bihar me kewal aur kewal 'Nitish Model' chalega (Only the Nitish Model will work in Bihar)," he declared. He suggested that the BJP spokesperson's comments appeared to relate narrowly to the home department's actions, whereas the "Nitish Model" encompasses a broader vision of comprehensive development and administrative efficiency.

Adding to the chorus of support, Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) chief and former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha publicly backed the existing governance model. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Kushwaha stated, "Whatever model Nitish has implemented, the coming NDA government too will promote it." This endorsement from an NDA ally further solidified the defense of Nitish Kumar's legacy and approach.

Intensified Speculation Over Succession

This heated debate over governance models has significantly intensified speculation regarding who will succeed Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister following his nomination to the Rajya Sabha earlier this week. While there remains no official clarity on when Nitish Kumar will take oath as a member of the Upper House of Parliament, discussions about the next Chief Minister have already gained considerable momentum within political circles.

The public clash between the BJP and JD(U) highlights underlying tensions and competing narratives within the NDA alliance in Bihar. It underscores a struggle for credit over governance achievements and sets the stage for potential negotiations and realignments as the state prepares for a leadership transition. The outcome of this dispute could influence not only the selection of the next Chief Minister but also the future dynamics of coalition politics in Bihar.
