Bhowanipore Assembly Constituency Voter Base Contracts by Nearly 25% Following Electoral Roll Revision
The Bhowanipore assembly constituency in Kolkata, which is set to witness a high-profile electoral battle between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, has experienced a significant contraction in its electorate. According to recent data, the voter roll has shrunk by approximately 25% following the Summary Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll, raising questions about the demographic impact on the upcoming contest.
Detailed Breakdown of Voter Deletions
Of the total 51,004 deletions from the electoral roll, analysis reveals that 23.3% are Muslim voters while 76.7% are non-Muslim voters. Before the SIR process commenced, Bhowanipore constituency had 2,06,295 registered voters. The revision process unfolded in multiple phases with substantial changes to the voter list.
In the initial phase of the revision, election authorities removed 44,787 names under various categories including:
- Absent voters
- Voters who have shifted residence
- Deceased individuals
- Duplicate entries
- Unmapped voters
A subsequent second round of revision resulted in an additional 2,342 deletions, while only 18 new voters were added to the rolls during this period. Approximately 14,154 voters were placed under adjudication for further verification, according to sources familiar with the process.
Supplementary Lists and Adjudication Process
Researchers from Sabar Institute conducted a detailed analysis of 15 supplementary lists that were published during the revision process. Their findings indicate that 10,238 voters who were initially marked for adjudication were later reinstated to the voter rolls, while 3,875 were ultimately deleted from the final lists.
"Among those deleted in supplementary lists, nearly 40% are Muslim voters," one researcher revealed, highlighting the disproportionate impact on this demographic group.
Election Commission sources confirmed that approximately 3,500 names were deleted during the adjudication process itself. "Nearly 14,000 cases were marked for adjudication," an official stated, emphasizing the scale of the verification exercise.
Demographic Analysis of Voter Deletions
The institute's comprehensive analysis further revealed that 43% of non-Muslim voters were placed under adjudication during the revision process. When examining the final outcomes, the data shows that while 7.7% of Muslim voters were ultimately deleted from the final electoral rolls, the corresponding figure for non-Muslim voters stood at a significantly higher 92%.
Earlier data from the revision process indicated that Muslim voters accounted for 22.7% of those marked under categories such as 'absent, shifted, dead/duplicate.' Their representation among 'unmapped' voters was approximately 26%, which aligns closely with their population share in the constituency.
However, in the 'logical discrepancy' category—a classification used for voters with inconsistencies in their registration details—the share of Muslim voters rose dramatically to 52%, suggesting potential issues with documentation or verification processes affecting this community disproportionately.
The substantial reduction in the voter base, coupled with the demographic patterns emerging from the deletion data, adds a new dimension to the already intense political contest in Bhowanipore. With Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seeking to retain her assembly seat against BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, these electoral roll changes could potentially influence voter mobilization strategies and campaign focus for both political parties in the crucial constituency.
