A critical technical failure in Bhopal's online LPG cylinder booking system on Saturday morning plunged the city into chaos, forcing hundreds of residents to rush to local gas agencies in a desperate scramble for essential cooking fuel. The system-wide glitch, which began around 8 AM, coincided with the crucial monthly booking window, leaving families anxious and exposed significant vulnerabilities in the city's fuel distribution infrastructure.
Widespread Disruption Across Residential Areas
The technical breakdown created immediate panic across multiple neighborhoods, with long queues forming at gas agencies in MP Nagar, Bittan Market, and TT Nagar. Residents reported complete failure of both mobile and web-based booking platforms, with error messages preventing successful transactions throughout the morning hours.
"I attempted to book through my phone starting at 7:30 AM, but the system simply wouldn't connect," explained Hari Singh, a concerned resident of Arera Colony. "By 11 AM, with no resolution in sight, I had no alternative but to physically visit the agency office."
Vulnerable Populations Hit Hardest
The disruption disproportionately affected elderly citizens and homemakers who typically rely on digital platforms for their monthly LPG requirements. "Senior citizens and housewives are suffering immensely because they depend entirely on online bookings from their homes," expressed Geeta Malik, a teacher from Neelbad Road, highlighting the accessibility challenges created by the technical failure.
The timing proved particularly problematic as residents faced the prospect of agency closures on Sunday. "With tomorrow being a holiday and agencies shut, and only one connection at home, we risked running completely out of fuel," emphasized local resident Ashok Saxena. "Securing a refill today was absolutely critical for our household."
System Restoration and Ongoing Concerns
While technical teams managed to restore the online booking system by evening, the damage had already been done. A staff member from a BHEL-area gas agency, speaking anonymously, confirmed: "We experienced a surge of inquiries throughout the first half of the day as people couldn't complete their online bookings. The situation gradually normalized by evening once digital services resumed."
However, the incident has exposed deeper systemic issues, including limited household LPG connections and weekend supply disruptions that leave families vulnerable to such technical failures.
Political Response to Broader LPG Issues
Separately, political tensions surrounding LPG pricing surfaced as Congress members from Govindpura, led by labor leader Deepak Gupta, organized a protest rally in Barkheda Pathani. The demonstration specifically targeted the recent Rs 60 price increase for LPG cylinders, with former minister P.C. Sharma joining protesters in demanding an immediate rollback of the hike.
