Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru to be Renamed After Socialist Leader Shanthaveri Gopalagowda

The historic Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru, one of Karnataka's largest and most significant public health institutions, is set to undergo a major name change. After 126 years of service, the hospital will be renamed in honor of veteran socialist leader Shanthaveri Gopalagowda, a prominent advocate for farmers' rights and a key figure in Karnataka's political history.

Honoring a Legacy of Service and Activism

Shanthaveri Gopalagowda, born in 1923 in Shivamogga district, came from an agricultural background and was deeply inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, leading him to join the freedom struggle. His political career flourished as he associated with other socialist leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia, and he was elected to the legislative assembly three times—in 1952, 1962, and 1967—from constituencies in Shivamogga district. Gopalagowda is widely regarded as a pioneer of socialist politics in Karnataka, dedicating his life to social justice and rural empowerment.

In a poignant connection, Gopalagowda spent his final six months at Victoria Hospital, where he passed away, making the renaming a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy. The move aims to recognize his contributions to the state and his unwavering commitment to public service.

A Glimpse into Victoria Hospital's Rich History

Victoria Hospital has a storied past that dates back to the colonial era. The foundation stone was laid on June 22, 1897, by Maharani Kempananjammanni Devi, also known as Vani Vilasa Sannidhana, the regent of the Mysore kingdom, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign. The building, constructed in a distinctive colonial architectural style, was inaugurated in 1900 by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India.

Over the decades, the hospital evolved into a major government medical facility, now attached to the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI). It serves as a critical healthcare hub, attracting patients from across Karnataka and beyond, thanks to its comprehensive medical services and advanced infrastructure.

Government Initiatives and Future Plans

In addition to the renaming, the government has announced a budget allocation of Rs 10 crore for the construction of a boys' hostel for MBBS and BDS students of BMCRI. This initiative underscores the ongoing commitment to enhancing educational and healthcare facilities in the region, ensuring that future medical professionals have access to quality accommodation and resources.

The renaming of Victoria Hospital to Shanthaveri Gopalagowda Hospital marks a significant step in preserving Karnataka's historical and political heritage while continuing to provide essential healthcare services to the public.
