West Bengal is in the grip of a steady winter chill, with the state set to experience a prolonged period of dry and cool conditions over the coming week. According to forecasts from the Alipore Meteorological Office, no significant change in temperature or weather pattern is expected for the next seven days, promising consistent cold weather for residents.
Mercury Plummets Across Districts
The cold wave made its presence strongly felt on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Kalaikunda in the West Midnapur district recorded a minimum temperature of 13.5 degrees Celsius, which is a notable four degrees below the normal average for this time of year. The chill was not confined to one area; minimum temperatures in the western districts of the state have plunged even further, settling around a brisk 10 degrees Celsius.
South Bengal, including Kolkata, is enjoying a pronounced winter weekend. Kolkata and its neighbouring districts saw the mercury drop to 15 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Weather experts indicate that temperatures could dip slightly further, potentially reaching around 14 degrees Celsius on Monday. The region is under the influence of a free flow of cold westerly winds, which is responsible for the widespread winter conditions. Overall, temperatures across South Bengal are generally up to four degrees below the seasonal norm.
Clear Skies and Morning Fog Forecast
The forecast for the upcoming days is dominated by dry weather with mainly clear skies. There is no chance of rain predicted for the next seven days, up to December 13, 2025, across both North and South Bengal. For Kolkata and its vicinity, the weather office predicts a mainly clear sky with maximum and minimum temperatures holding steady. The maximum is expected to hover around 25 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will remain near 15 degrees Celsius over the next five days.
The scenario in North Bengal will share the dry trend but with a characteristic winter feature. The region is expected to experience dew and fog during the morning hours, with the sky clearing up later in the day. Light to moderate fog may reduce visibility to as low as 200 metres in some areas in the mornings. The minimum temperature in North Bengal is also forecast to drop by an additional two degrees over the next two days.
Official Outlook: Stable and Dry Conditions
An official from the Alipore weather office confirmed the prevailing conditions, stating, "West Bengal is currently experiencing dry weather conditions with no significant synoptic situation prevailing over the region. Rainfall was nil for both North and South Bengal." Elaborating on the forecast, the official added, "The forecast for the next seven days predicts dry weather is most likely to prevail over all the districts... with only a chance of shallow to moderate fog or haze in the morning hours over the plains of North Bengal."
This period of stable, cool, and dry weather offers a classic Bengal winter experience. Residents are advised to enjoy the clear skies while bundling up against the morning and evening chill, especially in the western and northern parts of the state where the temperatures are most severe.
