Bengal Speaker Declares Trinamool MLA Expulsion Invalid

Kolkata: West Bengal Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose on Thursday declared that the Trinamool Congress's expulsion of MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha was not conducted in accordance with the party's constitution. Bose stated, "According to the party constitution, the expulsion letter isn't valid." He elaborated that expulsion cannot occur abruptly within a single day; a show-cause notice must be issued, and adequate time must be provided for a response.

Speaker's Justification for Accepting Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of Opposition

Bose explained why he accepted Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition, noting that Banerjee's faction possesses the required number of legislators. His comments hold significance as the Trinamool Congress has decided to approach the Calcutta High Court challenging Banerjee's elevation as LoP. The party argues that an expelled MLA cannot be appointed as LoP of the same party.

Bose's Legal Stance

Bose asserted, "I acted according to law. Nothing more or less. Previously, there were issues with signatures on the party's letter. We handed it over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for investigation."

Support from BJP Minister

Bengal minister and senior BJP leader Tapas Ray backed the Speaker's move. Ray stated, "The speaker's decision is absolute. The speaker has decided that the letter signed by 58 MLAs was in order and gave his ruling. This is final. The Chief Minister is the leader of the House. The LoP has also been appointed now." Ray further commented on the internal strife within the Trinamool Congress, saying, "Trinamool is imploding. This was bound to happen. When she (Mamata Banerjee) was breaking other parties, she should have realised that it would come back to haunt her."
