During the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee highlighted a pressing issue facing the state's administration: a notable deficit of Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO)-level officers. The CM emphasized that this shortage has been impacting governance and service delivery at the grassroots level. Following the meeting, Banerjee also took to social media platform X to publicly announce this pivotal decision, underscoring the government's commitment to administrative reforms.
Committee Formed to Evaluate Promotional Avenues
In a parallel development aimed at career progression for state officers, Chief Minister Banerjee announced the formation of a dedicated committee. This committee will be tasked with a comprehensive examination of promotional avenues and career pathways for officers across various cadres. A government source revealed that "the CM said officers of all cadres will get chances for promotion," indicating a broad-based approach to career advancement.
Specifically addressing the West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) officers, known as WBCS (Exe) officers, the Chief Minister outlined a structured probation and posting protocol. These officers will undergo a two-year probation period, which will be followed by a mandatory three-year posting as Block Development Officers (BDOs). The newly formed committee will critically evaluate this progression model to ensure it aligns with optimal administrative practices and officer development.

Looking ahead, Chief Minister Banerjee hinted at further administrative reorganization, stating that there will soon be more districts in Bengal.
