Campaigning Intensifies for Bagalkot Assembly Bypoll as Top Leaders Hit Ground
With Chief Minister Siddaramaiah arriving in Bagalkot on Monday, the political atmosphere has heated up significantly for the upcoming assembly bypoll. The campaign trail is witnessing a fierce battle as both the ruling Congress and opposition BJP deploy their top brass to woo voters in this crucial constituency.
Siddaramaiah's Emotional Appeal for Congress Candidate
Addressing a public rally, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah made an emotional plea to voters, urging them to back Congress candidate Umesh Meti, who is the son of the late minister HY Meti. "If the people of Bagalkot wish to express their condolences and respect for the late minister HY Meti, they should support his son Umesh Meti under any condition," Siddaramaiah stated emphatically.
He highlighted the senior Meti's contributions, noting that "he played a crucial role in securing a government medical college for Bagalkot," framing the vote as a tribute to his legacy. The Chief Minister also launched a broadside against the BJP-led Union government, alleging that it has failed to issue a gazette notification for 13 years to implement the Krishna Water Tribunal verdict, a long-standing regional issue.
On development fronts, Siddaramaiah claimed that while the BJP did not provide compensation to land losers for the Upper Krishna Project during their four-year tenure, his government initiated and completed the process within three years. "We have been allocating Rs 52,000 crore every year for development works across the state," he asserted, showcasing his administration's achievements. His campaign included stops in Sutagundar, Nainegali, and surrounding villages to connect directly with voters.
BJP's Counter-Campaign and Allegations
On the opposing side, BJP state president BY Vijayendra and other leaders are actively canvassing for BJP candidate Veeranna Charantimath. Vijayendra extended an open invitation for campaign support, stating he would welcome former BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal if he joins the effort. "Not only Yatnal, anybody can come to campaign in favor of the BJP. Some Congress functionaries are also working in favor of our candidate," he claimed, suggesting cross-party dynamics at play.
Responding to Congress minister MB Patil's remark that the BJP had "20 doors," Vijayendra retorted that the bypoll result would clarify the number of doors in the Congress, hinting at internal divisions within the ruling party.
Adding to the BJP's offensive, former deputy chief minister B Sriramulu leveled serious allegations against Siddaramaiah. He accused the Chief Minister of winning from Badami using fake votes in the 2018 assembly elections. "He defeated me by illicit and illegal ways. This has been revealed by his own associate, CM Ibrahim," Sriramulu alleged, attempting to undermine Siddaramaiah's credibility.
Stakes and Strategies in the Bypoll Battle
The Bagalkot bypoll has become a microcosm of larger political tensions in Karnataka, with both parties leveraging emotional appeals, development claims, and personal allegations to sway voters. Key issues dominating the discourse include:
- Legacy and Sympathy: The Congress is banking on the legacy of late minister HY Meti to garner support for his son.
- Development Records: Both sides are highlighting their contributions to projects like the Upper Krishna Project and medical college.
- Water Tribunal Implementation: The delay in gazette notification for the Krishna Water Tribunal verdict is a critical regional concern.
- Internal Party Dynamics: Allegations of cross-party support and internal divisions are being used as strategic tools.
As campaigning reaches its peak, the outcome of this bypoll is poised to have significant implications for the political landscape in Karnataka, testing the strength of both the Congress government and the BJP opposition ahead of future electoral battles.
