Assam Assembly Speaker Rejects Motion on Chief Minister's Alleged Remarks, Triggers Walkout
In a significant development at the Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati, Speaker Biswajit Daimary on Monday firmly rejected an adjournment motion moved by AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam. The motion sought an immediate discussion on alleged recent provocative remarks made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma against a particular community. This decision prompted AIUDF members to stage a walkout from the House in protest.
Speaker Cites Legislative Procedure in Rejection
While acknowledging the importance of the topic, Speaker Daimary stated that the matter could be appropriately addressed during the motion of thanks on the governor's address. "The topic is important; but it can be discussed during the motion of thanks of the governor's address. You can raise your points then and the CM can also answer your queries," Daimary explained.
He further justified his decision by pointing to the day's scheduled legislative business, noting that a vote on account was to be presented, which took precedence. "Accordingly, I reject the adjournment motion," the Speaker declared, emphasizing procedural adherence.
AIUDF MLA Alleges Incitement and Community Targeting
In moving the motion, AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam leveled serious allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Islam claimed that the chief minister was directly "inciting" people against a specific community through his "provocative statements."
Islam elaborated on the consequences, asserting that these remarks have emboldened miscreants, particularly in Upper Assam, to target members of this community. "Because of his statements, some miscreants have started torturing the people of the particular community, mostly in Upper Assam. Some have been physically attacked and asked to leave their workplaces," the AIUDF legislator stated during the assembly session.
Key Points of the Assembly Incident
- AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam moved an adjournment motion to discuss CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's alleged provocative remarks against a community.
- Speaker Biswajit Daimary rejected the motion, citing it could be discussed later during the motion of thanks.
- The rejection was also based on the day's legislative agenda, including a vote on account presentation.
- AIUDF legislators walked out of the House in protest following the motion's rejection.
- Islam accused the CM of inciting violence and claimed attacks on community members in Upper Assam as a result.
