Khasi Family Forced into Hiding Over Witchcraft Allegations in Assam Village
In a distressing incident from Assam, eight members of a Khasi family from Muktacherra village in Cachar district have sought refuge outside the Joypur police station. They were allegedly driven out of their home by fellow villagers from the same tribe, accused of practising black magic and witchcraft. The family, including children, was forced to hide in a forest for nearly a month after their house was demolished by the villagers.
Police Intervention and Temporary Shelter
Initially offered shelter at the police station, the family was later provided with a temporary arrangement outside its periphery as authorities investigate the matter. Joypur OC Albert Hmar stated, "We are investigating the matter. If any criminal activity is established, appropriate action will be taken." However, no arrests have been made yet in the case.
FIR Details and Allegations
An FIR filed by Biju Khasi on behalf of the family names Kringli Khasi, Brik Khasi, Stephang Khasi, and Eniao Khasi for allegedly threatening them. The complaint also mentions that another 10 to 15 individuals were involved in rendering the family homeless. The family members have raised questions, asking how they could possibly find time to practise witchcraft when they spend most of their days working in the forest to earn their livelihood.
Family's Struggle and Escape
According to the family, despite repeated attempts to convince the villagers of the punji (tribal settlement), no one believed their innocence. They alleged that whenever someone in the settlement fell ill, they were threatened with violence or even death on suspicion of practising witchcraft. Eventually, on February 10, the family was forced to flee the punji. Biju Khasi recounted, "Over the past one month we survived in the jungle by eating vines, leaves and banana plants. When it became impossible for us to continue without money or food, we decided to approach the police."
