Odisha Entrepreneur's Journey: From Hotel Room Keeper to Startup Founder
Odisha Entrepreneur's Journey to Startup Success

From Humble Beginnings to Digital Innovation: The Story of Chandra Shekhar Kar

In the vibrant landscape of India's startup ecosystem, the journey of Chandra Shekhar Kar stands out as a testament to resilience and unwavering determination. Hailing from Odisha, this young entrepreneur's path from academic pursuits to founding Mozenthra—a digital platform for short video creators—is marked by numerous challenges and a steadfast focus on creating opportunities where none seemed to exist.

Early Education and Initial Struggles

Chandra Shekhar Kar's foundation was built in Khordha, where he attended the Seventh Day Adventist Higher Secondary School. He later pursued a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the College of Basic Science and Humanities in Bhubaneswar. Like many graduates, he embarked on his professional journey with the hope of securing a job to eventually fund his own venture. However, his early career was fraught with difficulties.

His first job at a digital marketing firm lasted a mere 15 days, and he was never compensated for his work. Undeterred, he continued searching for opportunities, but the struggle persisted. At one point, he took up a position as a room keeper in a hotel, earning ₹7,000 per month without any weekly off. While this helped cover basic expenses briefly, the income proved insufficient, leading him to leave within 25 days.

Navigating Gig Economy and Entrepreneurship Attempts

Determined to improve his financial situation, Kar rented a scooty and began working as a delivery partner for a startup in Patia, Bhubaneswar. As the business was new, orders were limited. To supplement his income, he also signed up for food delivery through an app. However, tensions arose with co-workers over his association with multiple platforms, creating a difficult work environment. Eventually, he left both roles and returned to job hunting.

During this period, Kar actively submitted his CV to malls, offices, and digital marketing firms across Bhubaneswar, often traveling by bicycle. Despite his persistent efforts, repeated rejections due to lack of experience took a significant emotional and financial toll. At the time, he was staying with his uncle in Khandagiri, navigating these challenges with limited resources.

Kar made several attempts at entrepreneurship before finding success. His first venture—a sole proprietorship digital marketing service—did secure some clients, but delayed payments led to cash flow issues, forcing him to shut it down. He then started another digital marketing business with a college friend. While it initially generated around ₹1,500 per day, the venture did not last as his partner lost interest.

The Birth of Mozenthra: A Platform for Creators

These setbacks shaped Kar's outlook profoundly. Instead of waiting for opportunities, he decided to create one. After months of meticulous planning, he launched Mozenthra, a digital platform designed specifically to support short video creators. The name itself is symbolic, combining three ideas:

  • MO for creativity
  • ZEN for balance
  • THRA, inspired by a Sanskrit word associated with strength

The platform enables creators to upload short videos, build an audience, and monetize their content effectively. It operates on a revenue-sharing model, where 55% of earnings from advertisements and views go to creators, while 45% is retained by the company. This model aims to empower creators financially while sustaining the platform's operations.

Addressing Digital Storage Challenges

Beyond content creation, Mozenthra tackles another critical issue in the digital space: storage. The platform offers cloud storage at affordable pricing, targeting students, creators, businesses, and individuals who require large storage capacity but may not have access to expensive solutions. This dual focus on content monetization and storage accessibility sets Mozenthra apart in the competitive digital landscape.

A Journey of Perseverance and Purpose

For Chandra Shekhar Kar, Mozenthra represents more than just a startup—it is the culmination of years of struggle, learning, and perseverance. Through this platform, he aspires to create an ecosystem where creators can grow and earn sustainably, while making essential digital tools more accessible to a broader audience.

His journey, marked by setbacks and steady determination, reflects a clear focus on building something that bridges creativity with practical digital needs. It underscores the importance of resilience in entrepreneurship and serves as an inspiration for aspiring founders across India.
