Assam Eviction Drive: 516 Families, 2,800 Bighas Cleared

Large-Scale Eviction Drive Launched in Assam's Hailakandi District to Clear Forest Encroachments

In a significant move to reclaim reserve forest land, authorities in Assam's Hailakandi district initiated a massive eviction drive on Monday at Damcherra forest village under the Gharmora forest range. The operation, which began around 8 am, aims to clear illegal encroachments that have persisted for several years.

Scope and Execution of the Eviction Operation

The eviction drive targets the removal of 516 families and the reclamation of approximately 2,800 bighas of land. Jointly conducted by the district administration and the forest department, the operation deployed nearly 150 bulldozers across seven sectors to ensure efficient clearing of the area.

Officials reported that the first day of the drive passed peacefully, with no resistance from the occupants. Tight security arrangements were in place to maintain order throughout the process.

Background and Voluntary Relocation Efforts

The land in question is part of the Gharmora Inner Line Reserve Forest, located along Assam's border with Mizoram. It had been under illegal occupation for many years, with settlers constructing houses and cultivating crops, including areca nut plantations.

About a month prior to the eviction, notices were issued to the occupants, asking them to vacate within a stipulated period. Authorities noted that nearly 80% of the affected families voluntarily dismantled their homes and relocated elsewhere, demonstrating some cooperation with the legal process.

Day One Operations and Legal Measures

On Monday, eviction activities were carried out in sectors 5, 6, and 7, affecting over 150 families. Bulldozers were used to clear standing crops and plantations as part of the land reclamation process.

To ensure law and order, the district administration imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) across the district until February 5. Additionally, the entry of political leaders and party workers into the eviction sites was strictly prohibited to prevent any potential disruptions.

Affected Villages and Future Plans

The villages covered on the first day included Purba Damchera, Madhya Damchera, and Ujan Damchera. Authorities have confirmed that the eviction drive will continue as scheduled until February 5, under the close supervision of senior district and forest officials.

This large-scale operation highlights the ongoing efforts to protect reserve forest lands from illegal encroachments, balancing environmental conservation with the rehabilitation of affected families.
