Arambol Residents Launch Protest Against Illegal Massage Parlors
In a significant development in Mapusa, the people of Arambol village have initiated a strong protest against the proliferation of illegal massage parlors within their community. The locals are demanding a comprehensive ban on all massage parlors, citing concerns over their operations and registration practices.
Memorandum Submitted to Panchayat
On Monday, residents formally submitted a memorandum to the Arambol panchayat, calling for the immediate revocation of licenses granted to massage parlors. This action marks a coordinated effort by the community to address what they perceive as a growing nuisance in their village.
Panch Member Backs Agitation
The protest has gained substantial support from panch member Philpa Fernandes, who has been actively involved in identifying the scale of the problem. Through their investigation, they have pinpointed 11 illegal parlors operating across the four coastal wards of Arambol.
Deceptive Registration Practices Alleged
Residents have raised serious allegations regarding the registration of these establishments. Many massage parlors are reportedly registered under the names of individuals who reside abroad or in Mumbai, creating a facade of legitimacy while operating without proper oversight.
"We want a total ban on massage parlors, irrespective of 'training certificates' or legal veneers," stated former sarpanch Inacio Fernandes, emphasizing the community's unwavering stance against these businesses.
Panchayat's Response and Future Action
Sarpanch Sushant Gawade has acknowledged the residents' concerns and indicated that the panchayat will soon make a decision on the matter. "During gram sabha on Sunday, we will pass a resolution to ban massage parlors," he assured, highlighting the upcoming community meeting as a crucial step in addressing the issue.
The protest reflects broader community concerns about maintaining the village's character and safety, with residents determined to see concrete action from local authorities.
