AIADMK Grapples with Internal Dissent Over Ticket Allocation
Signs of dissent continue to surface within the AIADMK party in Tamil Nadu, as members express frustration over ticket allocation for upcoming elections. This internal turmoil has led to resignations and public protests, underscoring growing tensions within the party ranks.
Resignations and Protests in Kallakurichi and Mayiladuthurai
In a notable incident, Babu, the AIADMK town secretary from Kallakurichi, submitted his resignation during a candidate introduction meeting on Tuesday. He cited personal stress and health issues as reasons for his departure, stating, "I am not well both physically and mentally. I am under a lot of stress, so I cannot continue as town secretary." Before leaving, Babu prostrated before senior party functionaries on the dais, thanking them for their support and urging them to ensure the victory of party candidate Rajiv Gandhi.
Babu's resignation was driven by the denial of a ticket for his wife, Alaguvelu, who was elected from the constituency in 2011. This marks the second consecutive time she has been overlooked, adding to his distress. Despite his exit, Babu emphasized his desire for the AIADMK to win, showing a complex mix of personal grievance and party loyalty.
Further Dissent in Mayiladuthurai District
Meanwhile, in Mayiladuthurai, V B Bharathi, the district unit's presidium chairman and former Sirkazhi MLA, resigned from his party post in protest. He sent a resignation letter to party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, objecting to the selection of former minister O S Manian as the candidate for the Sirkazhi constituency. Bharathi stated, "I was anguished over the selection of Manian. Since I am unable to work along with such persons, I have decided to resign."
Adding to the dissent, former district secretary of Mayiladuthurai, VGK Senthilnathan, has also criticized party leaders for denying him a ticket. He expressed dissatisfaction with Manian's role in the decision, highlighting broader discontent within the local party structure.
Implications for AIADMK's Electoral Prospects
These resignations and protests reflect deeper issues within the AIADMK regarding candidate selection and internal harmony. As the party prepares for elections, such dissent could impact its unity and effectiveness in campaigning. The stress and disagreements voiced by members like Babu and Bharathi suggest a need for the party leadership to address grievances to maintain cohesion.
The incidents in Kallakurichi and Mayiladuthurai serve as a reminder of the challenges political parties face in balancing individual aspirations with collective goals. With elections looming, the AIADMK must navigate these internal conflicts to present a united front to voters.
