AIADMK Headquarters Braces for High-Stakes Seat-Sharing Negotiations

CHENNAI: The AIADMK's central office, MGR Maligai in Royapettah, is preparing for a significant and bustling day on Monday as party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) is set to conduct official seat-sharing talks with BJP's Tamil Nadu in-charge, Piyush Goyal, along with other alliance partners. The primary objective is to finalize the electoral deal ahead of the upcoming polls.

Background and Strategic Meetings

This crucial meeting follows recent discussions between EPS and T T V Dhinakaran with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi last week. Those talks were aimed at resolving differences and establishing definitive seat-sharing numbers. The Monday gathering at the AIADMK headquarters is strategically planned to address and counter criticism from Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and leaders of his alliance parties. They have been vocal about the frequent trips to Delhi and the emerging "Tamil Nadu vs Delhi" campaign narrative.

Leadership and Alliance Dynamics

Expressing satisfaction after his late-night meeting with Shah last Thursday, EPS informed journalists in Delhi that he was "happy" with the progress. He reiterated that the AIADMK is leading the alliance and assured that formal seat-sharing talks would be concluded within four days in Chennai. T T V Dhinakaran echoed this sentiment following his own meeting with Shah on Saturday.

A member of AIADMK's seat-sharing committee disclosed, "All the alliance leaders, including the BJP, have been asked to come to AIADMK HQ by 12 noon." Sources within the BJP indicated that Piyush Goyal will first meet with G. K. Vasan of TMC (M), T. R. Paarivendhar of IJK, and A. C. Shanmugam of the New Justice Party at a city hotel in the morning.

Parallel Meetings and Seat Allocations

Simultaneously, AMMK leader T T V Dhinakaran has instructed senior functionaries and potential candidates to attend a meeting at the party office in Adyar around 11 am. A senior AMMK functionary, who is also a candidate for the April 23 polls, confirmed, "Our leader is scheduled to meet Goyal at a city hotel." He further stated that the party has been "allocated 12 seats" in the alliance, highlighting the ongoing negotiations.

EPS's Leadership Reinforcement

Sources within the AIADMK revealed that EPS is keen to hold the seat-sharing talks and finalize formalities at the party headquarters to reinforce his "leadership." One source noted, "It was one of the main demands from EPS to protect his image as a strong leader," emphasizing the political strategy behind the location choice.

Upcoming Signings and Finalizations

After Goyal's visit, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss is expected to call on EPS at the AIADMK office to sign the seat-sharing deal. A PMK source mentioned, "Anbumani has asked senior functionaries to come to the AIADMK office by 1 pm," indicating the sequential nature of these alliance finalizations.

The developments underscore the intense political maneuvering in Tamil Nadu as parties gear up for the elections, with AIADMK aiming to solidify its position as the alliance leader amidst external criticisms and internal demands.
