Asom Gana Parishad Unveils Comprehensive Election Manifesto with Focus on Indigenous Rights
In a significant political development, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) officially released its election manifesto on Thursday, outlining a comprehensive vision for Assam's future. The regional party, which serves as a key ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), presented 18 major resolutions aimed at ensuring socio-political and economic security for the state's indigenous communities through the full implementation of the historic Assam Accord.
Core Promises: Constitutional Safeguards and National Recognition for Flood Crisis
The manifesto was unveiled at the party headquarters in Ambari, Guwahati, by vice-president Zoii Nath Sarmah alongside general secretaries Kamala Kalita, Manoj Saikia, and Tularam Gogoi. Among its central commitments, the AGP emphasized the urgent need for constitutional safeguards to protect the linguistic and cultural heritage of Assam's indigenous populations. The party also pledged to advocate vigorously for the complete enforcement of land rights for these communities, ensuring their economic stability and cultural preservation.
A critical environmental pledge involves pushing the central government to declare Assam's severe flood and erosion crisis a national problem. This move aims to secure enhanced resources and coordinated efforts to address the recurring natural disasters that have devastated the region for decades.
Cultural Initiatives and Economic Development Plans
In a nod to Assamese pride, the AGP proposed ambitious cultural projects, including the establishment of a cultural research centre and a large modern cultural complex named after renowned singer Zubeen Garg. Additionally, the party vowed to urge authorities to develop Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur, Guwahati, as a symbolic landmark celebrating Assam's rich heritage.
Employment generation features prominently in the manifesto, with the AGP promising to create new job opportunities for Assam's youth across both government and private sectors. The party outlined plans to set up industries based on local resources, promote entrepreneurial ventures, and introduce innovative policies to transform agriculture and allied sectors, thereby boosting the state's economy.
