In an exclusive interview, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari has predicted a landslide victory for his party in the upcoming 2026 West Bengal assembly elections. Adhikari, who currently serves as the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, also addressed speculation about his own candidacy for the Chief Minister's post.
BJP's Prospects in West Bengal
Adhikari expressed confidence that the BJP would secure a decisive mandate in the 2026 elections, citing growing public dissatisfaction with the current Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. He highlighted issues such as corruption, unemployment, and law and order as key factors that would drive voters towards the BJP.
Adhikari's Role in the CM Race
When asked about his own ambitions, Adhikari did not shy away from the topic. He stated that while the party's parliamentary board would ultimately decide the Chief Ministerial candidate, he was ready to serve in any capacity assigned by the party leadership. This statement has fueled speculation that he is a frontrunner for the top post.
Political Reactions
The TMC has dismissed Adhikari's predictions as wishful thinking. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh remarked that the BJP is struggling to maintain its existing vote share and has no chance of forming the next government. Meanwhile, political analysts suggest that the 2026 elections could be a close contest, with both parties intensifying their campaigns.
Adhikari's interview comes at a time when the BJP is focusing on expanding its footprint in West Bengal, a state where it made significant gains in the 2019 general elections but fell short in the 2021 assembly polls.
