Aasu Protests in Dibrugarh Against Fuel Price Hikes

Dibrugarh: All Assam Students' Union (Aasu) members once again took to the streets of Dibrugarh on Tuesday, protesting against the relentless rise in petrol and diesel prices that has sent fuel costs to their highest levels in four years.

Procession and Effigy Burning

The agitators took out a large procession through Dibrugarh carrying effigies of Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and raising slogans against the Centre's fuel pricing policy. The procession drew a significant turnout, reflecting the growing public anger over the repeated price hikes that have burdened ordinary citizens across the country.

The protesters converged near the city's iconic clock tower at Chowkidinghee Chariali, where they attempted to burn the effigies of the minister. Police personnel present on site attempted to prevent the effigy burning. However, the sheer volume of Aasu members proved overwhelming, and protesters successfully carried out the symbolic act.

Aasu Leader's Statement

Aasu Dibrugarh district president Rupjyoti Borthakur, who led the protest, said, “The people of this country are suffering. Petrol and diesel prices have been hiked repeatedly within a matter of days, and the burden is falling squarely on the shoulders of the common man — farmers, daily-wage workers and students. This is completely unacceptable.”

“We demand an immediate rollback of these fuel price hikes. If the Centre does not act, Aasu will be forced to intensify its agitation across Assam,” he added.
