The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is poised to make its electoral debut in the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) polls, having formally requested seven seats from its prospective allies in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition. This move marks a significant step in the party's expansion strategy within Maharashtra beyond its traditional urban strongholds.
Formal Request and Alliance Talks
On Thursday, AAP office-bearer Uttam Patil confirmed the party's outreach to the MVA partners, which include the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP). Patil stated that an official announcement regarding AAP contesting as a constituent of the MVA in Kolhapur is anticipated in the coming days. This development follows internal discussions where Congress MLC Satej Patil, a key figure in shaping the Kolhapur alliance, advocated for accommodating smaller and first-time parties within the coalition framework.
Sources indicate that the AAP is likely to be allotted seats in wards where its chances of victory are assessed to be higher, ensuring a strategic entry rather than a widespread but potentially unsuccessful campaign.
Strategic Focus on Wards and Candidate Selection
Detailing the party's specific demands, Uttam Patil revealed that AAP has requested one seat each in ward numbers 4, 5, 13, 17, and 18. Additionally, the party has asked for two seats in ward number 2, which includes a reservation for the OBC woman category. This targeted approach underscores a clear strategy.
"Rather than spreading thin, we want to focus on a strong strike rate and ensure some candidates win and enter KMC, which will help us strengthen our presence in the future," Patil explained. The party has already initiated the process by inviting applications from aspiring candidates. Following a scrutiny process, the final list of candidates will be announced.
Contingency Plans and Campaign Preparations
While keen on joining the MVA, the AAP has also prepared a contingency plan. Patil clarified that if last-minute hurdles prevent the alliance from materializing, the party will still field its own candidates in the seven identified wards. This demonstrates the party's commitment to establishing a foothold in Kolhapur's political landscape irrespective of the alliance outcome.
On the campaign front, preparations are in full swing. The party is actively working to bring its national leaders, including former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, to Kolhapur to rally support. Broader Maharashtra Expansion
The Kolhapur foray is part of AAP's wider strategy to contest in multiple municipal corporations across Maharashtra. The party has already announced candidates for civic polls in other major cities, including 25 candidates in Pune, and plans to compete in Nagpur and Nashik as well.
