In a significant law enforcement action, Mysuru district police detained 42 activists who attempted to storm the native village of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The activists were part of a group advocating for the implementation of an internal quota system for Scheduled Caste communities.
Attempted Protest at Chief Minister's Village
The detained individuals, associated with the Internal Reservation Horata Samithi, were led by an activist named Marappa from Raichur. Their plan was to launch a protest from Siddaramanahundi, the chief minister's native village located roughly 22 kilometers from Mysuru city. The village falls within the Varuna assembly constituency, which is currently represented by CM Siddaramaiah himself.
Police officials stated that the organization had previously requested permission to hold their agitation at Siddaramanahundi. However, the district police authorities rejected their request. As a precautionary measure, a ban order prohibiting assemblies was imposed in the area around the village for two days: Saturday and Sunday.
Elaborate Security Arrangements and Detention
Anticipating trouble, the police had made extensive security arrangements. A substantial police force was deployed near the village to prevent any breach of the ban orders. When the activists arrived, they split into three smaller groups in an attempt to enter Siddaramanahundi.
Their strategy, however, was immediately thwarted. Mysuru Superintendent of Police N Vishnuvardhana confirmed that the police, who were already on high alert, detained all 42 activists as soon as they tried to enter the village. The primary aim of the activists was to draw the state government's attention to their long-standing demand for internal reservation among the various SC communities.
Legal Consequences and Case Filed
Following the detention, the Varuna police station registered a formal case against the arrested persons. They have been booked under relevant legal sections for unlawful assembly and for violating the imposed ban orders. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions and persistent demands surrounding the complex issue of internal reservations within the Scheduled Caste category in Karnataka.
The police action underscores the administration's stance on maintaining public order while also reflecting the continued activism and protests concerning caste-based quota policies in the state. The detained activists remain in custody as legal proceedings begin.
