Horrific Night in Hooghly: Sleeping Child Abducted and Assaulted

A four-year-old girl became the victim of a brutal kidnapping and sexual assault in West Bengal's Hooghly district on Friday night, November 8, 2025. The shocking incident occurred while the child was sleeping peacefully beside her grandmother on a cot under a mosquito net in a railway shed where her family had been taking shelter.

Traumatic Discovery and Medical Emergency

The nightmare unfolded when someone tore through the mosquito net and snatched the sleeping child. "While she was asleep, someone tore the mosquito net and kidnapped her. Later, we found her in a wounded condition," the devastated grandmother recounted.

The child was later discovered unclothed, bleeding, and with bite marks on her cheek near a drain, lying in a pool of blood. The severity of her injuries required immediate medical attention at a local hospital before she was referred to Chandannagar hospital for specialized treatment.

Police Response and Legal Action

A senior officer from the Hooghly rural police confirmed the horrific crime and the initiation of an investigation. A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which deals specifically with sexual crimes against minors.

"We have initiated a probe and are trying to identify and apprehend the perpetrator," stated a local police officer, emphasizing their commitment to solving this disturbing case.

Political Firestorm Erupts

The incident quickly escalated into a major political controversy, with BJP leaders launching scathing attacks on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government. Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari led the charge, accusing police of being "busy burying the crime" rather than investigating it properly.

In a strongly worded post on X, Adhikari declared, "This is the True Face of Mamata Banerjee's free-for-all regime. A child's life is shattered, yet the Police are shielding the State's Fake Law & Order Image, by suppressing the truth." He went further to question whether police officers were functioning as law enforcers or "Mamata Banerjee's sycophants."

Allegations of Police Inaction

Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region, Sukanta Majumdar, amplified the criticism in a Bengali post on X. He highlighted the family's claim that police initially refused to accept their complaint when they approached the local police station to report the rape.

"In Mamata Banerjee's terrifying reign of demonic savagery, even a four-year-old girl is not safe," Majumdar wrote. "What kind of West Bengal is this, where a sleeping infant is abducted and raped?"

The BJP leaders painted a grim picture of law and order in West Bengal, with Adhikari asserting that "under your rule, West Bengal's law & order has hit ROCK BOTTOM" and following what he described as a predictable pattern of response to such crimes.

As the investigation continues to identify the perpetrator, this heartbreaking case has ignited serious concerns about child safety and police responsiveness in the state, while deepening the political divide between the ruling party and opposition.
