Varanasi Dalmandi Road Project: 125 Buildings Demolished, 12 More Set for Removal
125 Buildings Demolished in Varanasi Road Widening Project

In a significant development for the Dalmandi road widening project in Varanasi, 125 out of 187 designated buildings have been demolished as of Tuesday. According to K K Singh, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), preparations are complete to demolish an additional 12 buildings starting Thursday. He further stated that the total number of demolished structures is expected to exceed 140 by the end of the weekend.

Mosque Negotiations Ongoing

Officials confirmed that negotiations with the management committees of six mosques included in the demolition list have not yet been concluded. These discussions remain a critical component of the project's progress.

Demolition Operations Intensify

Initially, low-power machinery was used for demolition. However, since Monday, heavy-duty earthmovers have been deployed to accelerate the process. The sight of these machines parked near Langda Hafiz masjid on Monday evening prompted local residents to raise concerns. In addition to demolition, debris removal is underway. The PWD aims to complete all demolition work before the onset of the monsoon season in the region.

Project Overview

Under the Rs 224-crore project, the 650-metre-long Dalmandi road will be widened to 17.4 metres after the removal of 187 buildings. This transformation is expected to improve access to Gate 4 of Kashi Vishwanath Dham from Naisadak point on the Lahurabir-Godowlia road. By diverting commuter traffic from other routes, particularly the Maidagin-Godowlia road leading to the shrine area, the project aims to reduce congestion and enhance the pilgrimage experience.
