A 65-year-old woman, Rinku Devi, was brutally assaulted by her relatives after being accused of practicing witchcraft in Janakpur village under the Ben police station area in Nalanda district on Sunday.
According to her husband, Sanju Prasad, the allegation stemmed from the death of a four-month-old child in the family, for which she was blamed due to superstitious beliefs. On Sunday, while returning home after delivering milk, Rinku was attacked by family members. She managed to reach her house, but the accused allegedly followed her inside and continued the assault.
She was first taken to Ben primary health centre, but due to her critical condition, doctors referred her to Biharsharif Model Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Ben SHO Ravi Rajkumar stated that police have started an investigation after receiving a written complaint from the victim's husband, and action will be taken against those involved. The incident highlights the continuing danger of superstition-driven violence in rural areas.
