Telangana's Intensive 100-Day Campaign Successfully Prevents Over a Thousand Child Marriages

The campaign, which concluded on Sunday, was part of the central government's Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat (BVMB) initiative and coincided with the first anniversary of the BVMB programme.

The campaign, carried out from November 27, 2025, featured extensive grassroots engagement through the Bal Vivah Mukti Rath, a mobile outreach programme that took the anti-child marriage message directly to communities. This innovative approach covered over 4,800 villages and reached more than 22 lakh people across Telangana, raising awareness about the legal consequences and social impact of child marriage.

Officials associated with the campaign noted that the extensive outreach contributed to improved vigilance and reporting at the community level. The campaign organized a remarkable 31,209 awareness activities across Telangana, including:

Several events featured survivors of child marriage sharing their personal experiences, highlighting the long-term impact of early marriage on education, health, and livelihoods. These powerful testimonies helped communities understand the real consequences of the practice beyond legal prohibitions.

Educational and Religious Institutions Join the Movement

Educational institutions formed a crucial part of the outreach programme, with the campaign reaching 5,363 schools and colleges across Telangana. The programme engaged over 5.3 lakh students and teachers in discussions about children's rights, the legal age of marriage, and the importance of continuing education.

Religious institutions also played a significant role in the campaign, with 3,898 places of worship participating and 4,208 faith leaders joining efforts to raise awareness and discourage child marriage within their communities. This multi-faith approach helped address the practice across diverse religious and cultural contexts.

This intensified campaign comes at a time when child marriage remains a concern in Telangana. According to government data from 2019 to 2021, the prevalence of child marriage in the state is 23.5%, which is slightly higher than the national average of 23.3%.

The initiative focused on creating sustainable community-level mechanisms to prevent child marriage beyond the campaign period, with local stakeholders taking ownership of the issue.
