A tragic road accident in Madurai's Koodal Pudur area early Friday morning claimed the lives of a mother and her son, while her teenage daughter sustained injuries. The victims were identified as Sharmila (42), an employee at a local petrol bunk, and her son Pagal Babu (18). Sharmila's 14-year-old daughter Deepasree is currently undergoing treatment at Govt Rajaji Hospital.
Details of the Incident
According to police sources, the family was heading to Salem to attend a family function. They left their residence around 5 am and were walking towards a nearby bus stop to catch a ride to Arapalayam, from where they planned to board a bus to Salem. While attempting to cross the Koodal Pudur Main Road, an unidentified heavy vehicle, later identified as a truck, struck them at high speed and fled the scene without stopping.
Sharmila died on the spot due to the impact. Local residents alerted authorities, and police rushed to the spot, sending the two injured children to the hospital. However, Babu succumbed to his injuries while en route. Deepasree is in intensive care with serious injuries.
Police Investigation
The traffic investigation wing has registered a case and is scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify the vehicle and apprehend the driver. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
