Flood Preparedness Meeting in Lakhimpur

Dibrugarh: State disaster management minister Keshab Mahanta on Friday chaired a review meeting on flood preparedness at the Lakhimpur district commissioner's office, taking stock of the situation ahead of monsoon. Lakhimpur is one of the most flood-prone districts in the state, often featuring among the worst-affected districts.

Addressing the meeting, Mahanta, who is also Lakhimpur’s guardian minister, stressed the importance of well-coordinated advance preparations and directed officials to ensure that all mechanisms are in place to counter flooding. "Lakhimpur faces the challenge of floods every year with great severity. We cannot wait for the flood to arrive and then react. Advance preparedness, timely deployment of resources and effective coordination among all departments are essential," Mahanta said.

Deputy Commissioner Pronab Jit Kakoty said the district administration was taking all necessary steps to ensure preparedness at the ground level. "We are reviewing the status of embankments, relief camps, boats and communication systems. Every block and revenue circle has been put on alert," he said. The meeting also discussed deployment of NDRF and SDRF teams, pre-positioning of relief materials, maintenance of flood shelters and the readiness of the health department to respond to flood-related medical emergencies.
