Areas near the Guru Nanak Stadium and the Sports Authority of India training centre, where athletes train regularly, have seen footpaths and reserved parking lines completely taken over. This creates daily obstacles for both pedestrians and visitors arriving at these venues.
The problem is widespread and not confined to sports areas. Critical thoroughfares like Rani Jhansi Road and College Road are similarly affected. Vendors have set up shop directly on white lines demarcated for vehicle parking. This illegal occupation forces motorists to park on the main road, leading to inevitable traffic jams, especially during the busy evening hours.
Market Areas and Railway Station in Grip of Chaos
The situation at Feroze Gandhi Market has sparked complaints of a different nature. Here, sandwich and other food stalls occupy valuable space, while residents allege that local contractors illegally charge parking fees even for roadside spots that are officially marked as free parking zones. This adds financial insult to civic injury.
Similarly, the zone around the Ludhiana railway station and the stretch leading to Ghanta Ghar remains perennially clogged. Shopkeepers and food vendors have extended their operations onto walking areas and parking spaces, causing congestion throughout the day. The problem intensifies during the evening rush hours, creating a nightmare for commuters.
Residents Voice Frustration, Demand Strict Action
Citizens of Ludhiana have expressed growing anger and helplessness over the lack of regulation and enforcement. Daman, a resident who frequents Rani Jhansi Road for his gym and daily activities, stated that these food stalls have become a major hindrance to smooth traffic flow.
Echoing the sentiment, Vipul, who works at Feroz Gandhi Market, made a serious allegation. He claimed that local contractors have themselves encroached upon the white line parking area and are demanding payment from people for parking on the roadside.
