Kanpur Shelter Home Children to Receive Formal Education Following High Court Directive
The Juvenile Justice Committee of the high court has issued a landmark order mandating that juvenile boys and girls residing in Government Shelter Homes in Kanpur must now be enrolled in schools. This decision underscores that these children cannot be deprived of their fundamental right to education, as guaranteed under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.
Implementation of the Right to Education Act
Under the provisions of the RTE Act, the children will be admitted to schools specifically allotted for students from economically weaker sections. District Probation Officer Vikas Singh confirmed that the admission process has already been initiated. He stated, "The majority of boys and girls have undergone necessary testing, and they will be sent to schools under proper security arrangements to ensure their safety and well-being."
Current Statistics of Shelter Home Residents
The initiative impacts a significant number of children across various shelter homes in Kanpur:
- Government Girls Shelter Home Swarup Nagar: Approximately 150 girls are currently residing at this facility.
- Government Girls Shelter Home: An additional 69 girls are staying at this location.
- Government Boys Shelter Home Kalyanpur: This home houses 48 boys.
This move is expected to positively transform the lives of these children by providing them with access to formal education and better future opportunities.
