In a significant development for Gujarat's governance, former Gujarat High Court judge Justice (retd) Biren Vaishnav was sworn in as the new Lokayukta of the state on Wednesday. The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Lok Bhavan in Gandhinagar, where Governor Acharya Devvrat administered the oath of office to Justice Vaishnav.
Five-Year Tenure
According to a notification released by the state's general administration department, Justice Vaishnav will serve a tenure of five years as the Lokayukta. The Lokayukta is an anti-corruption ombudsman body in the state, tasked with investigating complaints against public officials.
Dignitaries Present
The ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Speaker Shankar Chaudhary, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, along with other cabinet ministers and senior government officials. Their presence underscored the importance of the appointment in the state's administrative framework.
The appointment of Justice Vaishnav comes at a time when the state is focusing on transparency and accountability in public life. His judicial experience is expected to strengthen the institution of Lokayukta in Gujarat.
