In a significant move aimed at enhancing passenger convenience, Indian Railways has announced a major revision to its reservation chart preparation schedule. The new policy, detailed in an official release from the Ministry of Railways via the Press Information Bureau (PIB) on 12 December, is designed to provide travellers with much earlier clarity on their ticket confirmation status.
What is the New Reservation Chart Rule?
The core of the update is a substantial increase in the lead time for preparing the first reservation chart. For trains scheduled to depart between 2:01 pm and 11:59 pm, as well as those leaving between midnight and 5:00 am, the first reservation chart will now be prepared at least 10 hours before the train's scheduled departure. This marks a significant shift from the previous common practice where charts were typically finalized around four hours before departure.
The Railway Board stated that the objective is transparent: to inform passengers well in time about their reservation status. This move specifically aims to remove the anxiety faced by passengers, especially those travelling from remote locations to catch long-distance trains. The earlier chart preparation allows for timely transfer of any vacant berths to subsequent stations through the Passenger Reservation System (PRS), optimizing seat allocation.

Passengers holding RAC or waitlisted tickets now gain a crucial window of several hours to decide on their next steps. They can choose to cancel, look for alternative travel options, or attempt to rebook a confirmed ticket on a different train without the last-minute rush.
