A significant fire incident occurred at the Sanjeevan Deep shelter home for paraplegics located in Sector 18, Airoli, Navi Mumbai, in the early hours of Tuesday around 3 am. Fortunately, no human casualties were reported as all 13 inmates residing at the shelter were evacuated before the flames could spread throughout the premises.
Extensive Damage and Loss
The blaze caused severe damage to the shelter home, charring beds, sewing machines, and wheelchairs. Tragically, three pet cats lost their lives in the fire. Anupam Negi, who manages the employment project for disabled individuals at the shelter, stated that he has been contributing to the facility despite being wheelchair-bound himself after a spinal injury in 2011.
Suspected Arson and Police Complaint
Negi suspects that miscreants deliberately ignited the fire near the shelter, which then spread to the building. He noted that a similar but smaller incident occurred last year. A formal complaint has been lodged at the Rabale police station, and an investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible.
Urgent Need for Basic Amenities
The shelter home is currently in dire need of essential supplies, including daily food packets for 15-20 people, drinking water, 20 hospital beds, mattresses, pillows, bedsheets, five table fans, ceiling fans, 20 wheelchairs, and eight walkers. Some NGOs and well-wishers have stepped forward to provide basic amenities. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has also been requested to assist with these necessities.
