A seminar held at D K College in Dumraon, Buxar, on Saturday became a platform for significant discussions on the evolving nature of social values and the crucial ethical responsibilities of media in a democratic society. Key officials, including the state information commissioner, emphasized the need for responsible freedom of expression.
Officials Highlight the Balance Between Freedom and Responsibility
State Information Commissioner Prakash Kumar, who served as the chief guest for the event, addressed the gathering. He pointed out that while democracy guarantees the freedom of expression, this right must be exercised with a strong sense of ethical duty. Kumar noted that content which damages social harmony, individual dignity, or the truth might sometimes find legal protection. However, its moral standing remains deeply questionable, heavily dependent on the impact it creates within the community.
The seminar, organized at a constituent unit of Veer Kunwar Singh University (VKSU) in Ara, saw active participation from students and faculty members. Kumar's remarks underscored the idea that social values are not static; they continuously transform alongside shifts in culture, technological advancement, and rising public awareness.
Media's Role as a Democratic Bridge
Echoing the theme of responsibility, BJP MLC Nawal Kumar Yadav presented his views on the media's pivotal function. He described the press and broadcasting channels as a vital bridge connecting democracy with the society it serves. Because of this central role, Yadav argued, the media carries a profound ethical burden.
He cautioned against the pitfalls of sensationalism, the spread of misinformation, and reporting skewed by bias. Such practices, the MLC warned, might generate short-term attention or ratings but ultimately erode the foundational values of democracy over a longer period. His comments reinforced the call for journalism that prioritizes integrity over instant gratification.
Calls for Institutionalizing Moral Education
The discussions also ventured into the realm of education as a tool for fostering ethics. College Principal Veena Kumari put forward a concrete suggestion during the proceedings. She proposed that a dedicated chapter focusing on morality should be introduced into the curriculum at the graduation level. This initiative, she implied, would help inculcate ethical thinking in young adults as they prepare to enter professional and public life.
The event was further addressed by VKSU Registrar Ram Vinod Thakur and Inspector of Colleges Raju Mochi. Their presence highlighted the academic importance accorded to the seminar's theme. The collective discourse at D K College concluded with a consensus on the need for continuous dialogue around ethics, both in public communication and within the education system, to strengthen the democratic fabric of the nation.
