A 24-year-old lawyer died by suicide in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday, leaving behind a note that cited childhood abuse as the reason for her extreme step. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local legal community and raised questions about mental health support.
Incident Details
The woman, identified as Priya Singh, was a practicing lawyer at the Kanpur district court. She was found hanging in her room in the Jajmau area. Her family members alerted the police after they found the door locked from inside and she did not respond to calls.
Police reached the spot and broke open the door. They recovered a suicide note in which she mentioned that she had been facing mental trauma due to childhood abuse. The note also stated that she had lost her father recently, which added to her distress.
Police Investigation
Circle Officer (CO) Jajmau, Rajesh Kumar, said that the body has been sent for post-mortem and an investigation is underway. "The suicide note mentions childhood abuse and the recent demise of her father as reasons for taking the extreme step. We are probing the matter from all angles," he said.
Police have also recorded the statements of family members and are verifying the claims made in the note. No arrests have been made so far.
Community Reaction
The legal fraternity in Kanpur expressed grief over the incident. Senior advocate Rakesh Tiwari said, "She was a bright young lawyer with a promising career. It is tragic that she felt so alone that she took this step. We need to create a support system for young professionals facing mental health issues."
Friends and colleagues described her as a hardworking and cheerful person. One of her friends, on condition of anonymity, said, "She never shared her pain with anyone. We are shocked and saddened."

This case highlights the need for greater awareness about mental health, especially among young professionals. Experts emphasize that childhood trauma can have long-lasting effects and that seeking help is crucial.
